Environmental Reporting from Industrial Reality: Event-Referenced Environmental Reporting

Abstract

Environmental reporting requires explaining what happened during manufacturing, including how materials were used, handled, and managed. In many facilities, the information needed to prepare these reports already exists in facility data systems, but it is not always organized in a way that makes reporting simple. This paper reflects the perspective of a late-career environmental regulator reasoning forward from post-retirement study and curiosity rather than from system design experience. The focus is on information flow, traceability, and workload rather than regulatory enforcement or environmental outcomes. Where event records exist, environmental reports may be clearer and less burdensome if they connect directly to those records. For ease of reference, this approach is described here as eventreferenced environmental reporting. The discussion may be useful to facilities, regulators, and others who rely on reported environmental information. Environmental reporting can be grounded in identifiable events.
