The instrumentalization of conspiracy theories by politicians for their political interests has never been something new in Turkish history, the opposite way around political leaders get used to convince people in existence of internal and external enemies while people get used to believe in the constructed by government conspiracy theories. The conspiracy theories are mostly useful in the extreme situations in order to suppress the dissidents or to switch people’s attention to different issues in the case of governmental wrongdoings. The intensification of conspiracy theories by the AKP government has started right after the governmental shift from democratization into more authoritarian and later even totalitarian regimes.
