Abstract

English Abstract: Waste pickers’ organizations have been analyzed in different contexts as a way to exit informality and to overcome poverty of this sector’s workers. This paper focuses on two case-studies carried out in municipalities of the Metropolitan area of Santiago de Chile in which there are a number of waste pickers’ organizations. The aim of the study was to understand the organizational dynamics and the potential of these organizations in the light of shifting from a situation of informality, associated with the concept of popular economy, to more structured organizations in the context of social and solidarity economy. Results highlight several advantages that recyclers’ organizations bring at the social, economic, environmental and community level, and several challenges that in this context are still preventing these organizations’ further development and the empowerment of their members.
