NOTA: A Fruitless Methodical Politics

Abstract

For the first time in general elections the option of a negative vote will be available to the voters. The election commission has ordered Chief Election Officers of all the States and Union territories to include a ‘NOTA’ button on all the electronic voting machines (EVM). The option is provided at the bottom of the EVMs after all the candidates have been listed in the voters list with their respective symbol.None of the Above option will give a voter an option to reject all the candidates in the electorate if they don’t seem fit. This even though looks as a plebeian is a step to strengthen the democracy and giving a choice to the voters. But the option of NOTA is very raw right now. It is a toothless tiger at the moment. NOTA empowers a citizen to reject the political parties or candidates on the voters list; it also disappoints the voters by not taking a step to curb the dissatisfaction. The introduction of the NOTA button in the Electronic Voting Machines is definitely a positive step in election processing in India. But it is the need of the hour to add more ‘weightage’ to NOTA. This essay aims to highlight all those areas where NOTA fails. The NOTA option has been limited in its execution and therefore fails to provide any concrete solution to the persistent problem of election. This essay will look into all these loop holes and give a conclusion to the same.
