Although economic and political theories have evolved as different fields through the twentieth century, the theoretical and existential relationship between political and economic systems has converged so narrowly that liberal democracies became an arguable endpoint for human historical evolution (Fukuyama 1992). Democracy and economic development may both fuse in an universal norm within an interpretation of history that sees the future exerting a progressive attraction over economic growth and democratic institutions. Under this modernization paradigm, the relationship between economic development and democracy is explained through historical analysis. Both are endogenous to human progress and thus what begs explanation is the historical process itself.
