This paper examines the problem of current status of the Russian language in Ukraine. Based on the data of a monitoring “Ukrainian society” conducted by the Institute of Sociology (Kyiv) on the yearly basis since 1994, I define the factors that influence people’s attitudes toward the Russian lan-guage. The focus of the analysis is on the individual- and regional-level effects. The results show that there is a significant regional effect on the degree of support of the Russian language: the more Rus-sian-speaking people live in the oblast (administrative unit), the more likely people from this oblast are to support the official status of the Russian language. In the meantime, no nationality effect was re-vealed suggesting that Ukrainians and Russians do not differ in the level of support of the official status for the Russian language in Ukraine.
