The management of distance is a central task of the boundaryless organization. Despite the great practical relevance of distance for organizations and although there is already empirical evidence for the effects of distance on organizational behavior, the theoretical concept of distance is still insufficiently integrated in organizational theory and research. The present article conveys an individual-centered perspective on the management of distance in distributed, especially virtual, organizations and teams. Construal Level Theory is a social-cognitive theory which is particularly suitable for explaining and predicting the effects of perceived distance on behavior in virtual teams and organizations. The article shows how this theory can contribute to a better understanding of the actions and interactions of individuals in distributed and virtual organizations and teams.
