A signature is a person’s name or mark made to authenticate a document or writing. A signature can be in any form or symbol, including manual form, a squiggle and in an electronic form to authenticate that the writing is that of the signatory. An electronic signature is no more than an electronic means of performing the functions of a signature. Whatever the form, signatures achieve many purposes - they -provide ‘evidence in writing’ for many purposes, caution before signing, a warranty of truth, evidence of intention and data for record-keeping.
