Abstract : This report covers work involving some literature survey and preparation of a presentation for the 1962 Educational Series of the American Society for Metals. This presentation covers the nature of mechanical wear and its reduction by lubrication in moving assemblies. The interaction between two (2) contacting solids causing mechanical wear is examined on a microscopic scale. The basic principles of lubrication are presented with emphasis on the journal bearing. Common lubrication techniques are described with particular reference to the selection of lubricants according to their physical and chemical properties. Advanced techniques currently being developed are briefly reviewed and their potential applications are cited.
