Abstract : Mexico, like other nations in Latin America, can't escape the problems surrounding drug-trafficking and its consequences. Despite years of concentrated effort by all levels of Mexican government and its various organizations, the cycle of drugs continues. The President of Mexico, Ernesto Zedillo Ponce de Leon, has publically stated to the American media that drug trafficking is a threat to Mexican national security, not only because of the crime that accompanies such activity, but also because of the growing wealth that enables traffickers to corrupt police and government institutions. This paper provides an overview of the drug-trafficking problem in Mexico, and underlines the necessity to closely coordinate counterdrug operations between the United States and Mexico.
