Fiber Reinforced Structural Ceramics for Construction

Abstract

Abstract : This report summarizes the major findings during the second year of a five-year research project with the ultimate goal of developing a light-weight, durable, strong and impact-resistant ceramic composite for use in advanced constructed facilities. During the first year of this project, short-fiber reinforced ceramic composites were identified to be the class of ceramic materials with the highest potential for development into a construction material. A model composite system was also chosen. In this project year, work has concentrated on the processing and preliminary testing of model composites as well as on the theoretical prediction of pre-peak behavior of short-fiber composites. Also, a study on the potential of ceramics construction as well as obstacles to its use were carried out to provide a foundation for future work. Advanced construction materials; Structural ceramics; Fiber reinforced ceramics; Composites materials.
