Abstract The modelling and history matching of hydrocarbon reservoirs is widely accepted to be a challenging task requiring considerable expertise. This paper describes the application of advanced statistical and knowledge based techniques to the development of a software tool aimed at making the history matching process more efficient and effective. We conclude that, provided such systems are used as decision support tools for the reservoir engineer, they can significantly enhance the ability of the human expert to obtain a satisfactory history match.
