Captura de carbono como servicio ecosistémico en dos parques de Lima Metropolitana

Abstract

El cambio climático está exacerbado por emisiones de Gases de Efecto Invernadero (GEI), siendo el dióxido de carbono (CO2) el más relevante. Conociendo que las ciudades generan entre el 75% y el 80% de las emisiones de CO2 globales, las áreas verdes urbanas (AVU), como parques y bosques urbanos, son cruciales en la mitigación del cambio climático al reducir la temperatura y mejorar la calidad del aire. Por ello, este estudio cuantificó la capacidad de los árboles para almacenar carbono en dos parques emblemáticos de Lima (Perú) (el parque Ramón Castilla (RC) y el Parque Principal de la Unidad Vecinal N°3 (UV3)). RC, con una mayor diversidad de especies, tiene una mayor cantidad de carbono almacenado por unidad de área (41.85 ton C/ha) que UV3, dominado por árboles de la especie Eucalyptus globulus (15.10 ton C/ha), y, a su vez, en comparación con otros ecosistemas de América Latina, su capacidad de captura de carbono es mayor que bosques de Polylepis altoandinos (38 ton C/ha) y menor que bosques amazónicos (bosques de terrazas 335.11 ton C/ha y bosques inundables 141.81 ton C/ha). Esta información es relevante a implementarse en la gestión de parques urbanos de Lima y para la generación de una mayor conciencia sobre los servicios ecosistémicos que estos parques brindan.
