Abstract

Welding plays a vital role in the industrial sector, particularly in metal fabrication, where strong and durable joints are essential. This study aims to compare two commonly used welding techniques—Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)—based on their application at PT. PG Candi Baru Sidoarjo. The comparison focuses on key parameters including weld quality, time efficiency, operational convenience, equipment requirements, cost, and safety. Employing an experimental approach, observations and measurements were carried out on low carbon steel specimens welded using both methods. The findings reveal MIG welding produces cleaner welds with faster execution, making it suitable for mass production and controlled environments. Conversely, SMAW offers versatility in diverse conditions, involves lower equipment costs, and is better for outdoor applications. These results indicate selection between MIG and SMAW should be guided by production needs, budget constraints, and environment. This study provides insights for enhancing welding practices.
