One of several mechanisms used by the Atlanta Area Family Planning Council to plan and coordinate family planning services for Metropolitan Atlanta (Georgia) was a computer model developed by the Sloan School of Management Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to stimulate family planning service programs beginning in 1971. A file was constructed including data on initial active patients contraceptive methods chosen discontinuation rates fixed variable and communication costs number of women eligible to receive service fertility in this group of women and referral of patients to other agencies. Also included in the file were outreach activity and effectiveness numbers of new patients from sources other than outreach patients previous contraceptive experience total monthly visit capacity of the agency and number of sterilization procedures performed. To assist in program planning and bugeting for the following year the model was used to explore service alternatives as well as to stimulate aggregate program growth. As a result of the first years experience the model has proved to be a very effective tool for planning and suggests the great potential in the application of management science in Atlantas family planning service.
