
In this article the author discusses the relationship between science, knowledge, and society. He notes that despite a few instances in which science has been marred by things that have gone wrong, such as unanticipated side effects of drugs, Western industrialized societies have enormous respect for science. He discusses some drawbacks regarding the perception of science's role in public health, the role of civil society in science, and translational science.
