Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are defined by symptom complexes that occur in the absence of organic, systemic, or metabolic diseases that are likely to explain the symptoms. The criteria were first standardized by a group of experts in 1995 forming the Rome I criteria. There have been 3 subsequent iterations with Rome IV being released in 2016. Pain-associated FGIDS are common, with one of the two most prevalent being functional dyspepsia (FD).
