Abstract

Este volumen cuenta con un detallado estudio sociohistórico presentado por Nieves Rodríguez Valle, editora crítica de la obra, quien enriquece la lectura con las notas a pie de página. La manganilla de Melilla tiene un tono distinto a la mayoría de los textos alarconianos, pues el argumento se basa en un hecho que sucedió en la fortaleza española en 1564, teniendo como uno de sus temas principales la polémica de la conversión. Y aunque entre sus personajes existen las damas, los galanes y el gracioso, no es el enredo amoroso lo que se resuelve en el final. La historia comienza cuando Alima, que ha escapado de Azén (moro que la robó al enamorarse de ella), descubre que Pimienta (un cristiano encubiero que se hace pasar por moro) no la está llevando a Fez con su padre, sino a Melilla. Llega a su rescate Pedro Vanegas de Córdoba, galán cristiano. La huída de Alima es lo que podrá en movimiento fuerzas militares de ambos bandos, pues Azén desea recuperarla y conquistar su amor, aunque para ello deba atacar una ciudad. La resolución del conflicto llega con la conversión al cristianismo de varios de los personajes.
