Abstract

Durante a Guerra Fria (entre Estados Unidos - EUA e União Soviética - URSS, entre 1947 e 1991), a influência religiosa dos EUA no Brasil e em outros países da América Latina foi evidente, com investimentos em ações de missionários e entidades religiosas fundamentalistas que apoiavam as agendas políticas e diplomáticas dos EUA. A disputa entre líderes religiosos do protestantismo brasileiro em relação à filiação ao Conselho Mundial de Igrejas – CMI em 1964 refletiu o embate entre antiecumenismo e ecumenismo, assim como anticomunismo e comunismo. Enquanto alguns defendiam a não filiação, alegando inclinações socialistas e comunistas do CMI, outros argumentavam a favor da existência de espaço para diferentes sistemas políticos e econômicos dentro da comunidade cristã. O presente artigo mostra a necessidade de estudar a relação entre religião e Guerra Fria para compreender melhor as dinâmicas políticas e sociais desse período e a importância da presença de como se constituiu e se desenvolveu o fundamentalista religioso como pensamento importante nesse contexto.
