Determinants of Financial Inclusion in Ethiopia for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises: Evidence from Bale Zone Selected Towns

Abstract

Financial inclusion refers to a manner of providing financial institutes and smooth financial transaction mechanisms in an easy way. Financial inclusion enables the economy to grow sustainably by improving social well-being. The main objective of this study is to examine the major Determinants of Financial Inclusion in Ethiopia for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises: Evidence from Bale Zone Selected Towns. To achieve the specified objective data were collected from both primary and secondary source of data, descriptive and explanatory research design and mixed research approach were used for this study. Primary data were collected mainly through questionnaires. 421 questionnaires were distributed the selected sample of the study. For this study Probability sampling method were used which includes stratified and systematic sampling methods for MSMEs as well as non-probability sampling method mainly convenience sampling method for financial institutions. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools. Binary logistic regression model was used to identify the key determinants of financial inclusion in MSMEs. The basic independent variables those were used for this study include education level, awareness, income level, trust on financial institutions, financial literacy, collateral requirement, cost of borrowing, distance from MSME and technology use and dependent variable financial inclusion. The findings of the study confirmed that education level, awareness, income level, collateral requirement, cost of borrowing, distance from MSME and technology use have significant effect on financial inclusion of MSMEs. This study recommends that government and financial institutions have better encourage financial service providers, offer fiscal incentives or request financial institutions and serve poor or low-income people. Financial institutions should adopt technologies that ensure financial services are more accessible such as mobile banking. Moreover, MSME have better enhance the saving habits that are helpful to increase amount of income and the literacy level for the best use of financial services.2
