Abstract

Los mapas de cobertura del suelo son muy importantes para comprender el proceso de cambio de uso de la tierra, así como para la conservación y la gestión racional de los recursos naturales. Sin embargo, en Costa Rica, la información detallada de la cartografía digital sólo está disponible después de la introducción de las imágenes Landsat y los Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) en la década de 1980´s. Por lo tanto, es crucial recuperar información de las hojas cartográficas históricas para proporcionar una mejor línea de base histórica. En este artículo se explica el proceso de conversión y corrección del mapa digital de coberturas del suelo de la primera edición de las hojas cartográficas de Costa Rica, publicadas inicialmente en papel por el Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN) a escala 1:25.000, basándose en fotografías aéreas tomadas en 1945. Estas hojas cartográficas contienen información valiosa sobre las coberturas terrestres de bosques, humedales, manglares, salinas y cuerpos de agua. Por lo tanto, el objetivo principal de este proyecto fue crear una capa única y corregida de coberturas naturales del suelo en formato digital para la Península de Nicoya, de acceso libre y gratuito al público a través de la plataforma del Sistema Nacional de Información Territorial (SNIT) del Instituto Geográfico Nacional de Costa Rica.
