Abstract

En su monumental Vida y opiniones del caballero Tristam Shandy, Laurence Sterne afirma que la escritura no es más que otro nombre para la conversación. Sterne se refiere sin duda a la escritura en sus diversas manifestaciones artísticas, y no creo que nadie pueda decir que no tiene razón. La relación entre lo hablado y lo escrito puede ser muy profunda y puede también estar llena de influencias y de concesiones mutuas. Y la hoja de papel en la que un autor escribe las frases con que avanza su libro es, a la vez, depósito y filtro de sus esfuerzos por contarnos una historia que, de otra manera, podría perderse para siempre. Se escribe para ser leído y la mayor prueba de ello es el libro como resultado de ese esfuerzo. Ni siquiera el hecho de permanecer inédito un libro resulta convincente para probarnos lo contrario. No hay libro gratuito, por consiguiente. O, para decirlo con otras palabras, ninguna historia se escribe con total desinterés, prescindiendo por completo del afán mínimo de saberla leída y recordada.
