Abstract

Subject – the image of a migrant in the Swedish media. This work is devoted to the study of the influence of the civilizational aspect on the image of a migrant in the Swedish mass media. The methodological basis of the work is such general methods as: the principle of historicism, analysis and synthesis, methods of induction, generalization and abstraction. Particular attention is paid to such a special method as quantitative content analysis of publications in the Swedish media: more than 500 articles were analyzed, 309 of which formed the source base of the study. Qualitative content analysis made it possible to analyze the ratio of positive, negative and neutral assessments of migrants of various nationalities. The paper analyzes and compares the image of a migrant in the Swedish media, including the materials of the newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen, as well as in the news agencies SVT and FriaTider for various periods, obtained data were compared with Huntingtons hypothesis about the influence of the civilizational aspect on the attitude of the population towards migrants. The results of the work were the confirmation of the Huntingtons hypothesis, since the migrant representative of the Islamic civilization is depicted as an uneducated, low-skilled specialist, terrorist, murderer, thief or swindler, the migrant representative of the Orthodox civilization is represented as unscrupulous, a thief, a drug dealer, and a migrant representative of Western civilization is hardworking, educated, intelligent.
