La historia de las células madre comenzó ya hace dos décadas durante las cuales se ha producido un cambio radical en el horizonte de la medicina. El reconocimiento de la existencia de varios tipos de linajes celulares provenientes del blastocito y de la sangre periférica del adulto, junto con su capacidad de producir nuevos tejidos, inclusive de capas embrionarias diferentes, ha permitido diseñar nuevos tratamientos antes considerados imposibles.
