Reflorestamento versus floresta nativa: tendências e desafios à siderurgia na Amazônia Oriental (Paper 295)

Abstract

Nos anos 80, com o início a exploração das ricas jazidas de minério de ferro da serra de Carajás, a expansão da produção de ferro-gusa no Brasil desloca-se de Minas Gerais para o norte do Brasil, nos Estados do Pará e do Maranhão. Este novo pólo siderúrgico se viabilizou a partir de três circunstâncias, a saber: primeiramente, a implantação de guseiras em Marabá-PA e Açailândia-MA foi favorecida por incentivos fiscais obtidos junto à SUDAM e à SUDENE; em segundo lugar, a localização estratégica destas empresas ao longo da estrada de ferro Carajás lhes garante tanto o fornecimento a baixo custo do minério de ferro e quanto o acesso a mercados externos, via escoamento da produção pelo porto de Itaquí, no Maranhão; por fim, mas não menos importante, a vasta floresta nativa e as sobras do setor madeireiro garantiam um fornecimento ilimitado de carvão vegetal a baixos custos. Estes três fatores determinaram desde então uma trajetória de evolução comum pólos siderúrgicos de Marabá e Açailândia.Palavras-Chave: Reflorestamento. Siderurgia. Amazônia.
