Negociaciones con el poder: presencia indígena en tres acciones escénicas del siglo XVII en la Real Audiencia de Quito

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la presencia y la función simbólica de los estamentos indígenas en tres acciones escénicas desarrolladas en la Real Audiencia de Quito durante el siglo XVII: las celebraciones por el nacimiento de los infantes María Eugenia (1627) y Baltasar Carlos (1631), y el recibimiento brindado al corregidor Alonso Florencia Inca (entre 1666 y 1667). A partir de una metodología de análisis histórico-discursivo basada en la revisión de relaciones festivas, crónicas y estudios historiográficos, el trabajo examina cómo los grupos indígenas y, en especial, sus élites, participaron activamente en los dispositivos de teatralidad pública característicos de la sociedad colonial. El estudio propone que dichas acciones escénicas funcionaron como espacios de negociación simbólica con el poder colonial, pues permitieron a ciertos actores indígenas construir formas de prestigio, legitimidad y representación dentro del orden jerárquico hispánico. Desde un enfoque de historia cultural y estudios sobre teatralidad barroca, el artículo muestra que las fiestas públicas no solo sirvieron para reafirmar la hegemonía colonial, sino también para abrir márgenes de intervención simbólica a los sectores subordinados.
