Abstract

Starting with a critique of the lack of delimitation of instrumentalism from end-oriented rationality in Horkheimer, instrumental reason is explained as the dependence on means. In opposition to Max Weber end-oriented rationality is then not seen as an alternative to value-oriented rationality. Instead a functional value concept is developed which is constitutive to the act of setting ends. In a historical digression on the concept of practice it is shown that Webers distinction was absolete in the history of that problem in his time. Using this concept of value an idea of utopian schemes can be construed, which is no Ionger opposed to pragmatism but a necessary supplement to it. Fu!thermore, this provides a basis on which the distinction between structure-related conservativism as a form of instrumental reason and a new value-related conservativism may be explained.
