Since 2005, Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt undertook the publication of his “writer’s diaries”, commenting in an essayistic mode some of his novels and books of short stories. This paper explores these postfaces as an integral part of the essayistic works of the writer. Their autoliterary component, as well as their strong critical content, enhance the (meta)literary dimension of this part of Schmitt’s works. We analyze the typology of essayistic practices and the metaliterary devices together with the functions of the original peritexts (the writer’s diaries in Concerto in Memory of an Angel and Two Gentlemen of Brussels) and the subsequent peritexts (the diaries in The Gospel According to Pilate, The Alternative Hypothesis and Ulysses from Bagdad.
