Abstract

Guidelines for nurse education require educational institutions to facilitate the development of nursing students’ ability to reflect on various topics, including the implementation of the profession in practice, and to adjust their own professional practice under guidance. To accommodate this requirement, reflective work must therefore hold a central position in the education, and reflection in groups can be a suitable and important arena. We explored nursing students’ experiences with the learning environment in reflection groups during practice studies. Two focus group interviews were conducted (n = 15), followed by a thematic analysis. Two themes emerged: 1) being on a continuum between vulnerable and robust relationships, and 2) being on a continuum between leadership that passivizes or activates the group. Our research highlights the importance of practice teachers balancing group management and relationship building to achieve an engaging and developing learning environment in reflection groups.
