Abstract

I denne artikkelen går jeg gjennom noen sentrale aspekter av Maurice Merleau-Pontys analyse av kjærlighet både fra Phénomenologie de la perception fra 1945 og forelesningsrekken L’institution, la passivité fra 1954–1955. Jeg retter søkelyset spesielt på den senere analysen og viser hvordan Merleau-Ponty her, med analysen av kjærlighet som institusjon, tar avstand både fra tanken om kjærlighet som passiv skjebne og tanken om kjærlighet som fritt valg og subjektiv «illusjon». Med institusjonsbegrepet er det mulig å tenke kjærligheten som noe som både er aktivt og passivt samtidig. Dette gjør det videre mulig å trekke fram fire aspekter som kjennetegner kjærligheten hos Merleau-Ponty: (1) Kjærlighet instituerer en historie som både peker mot fortiden og mot framtiden; (2) kjærligheten er virkelig som levd erfaring i den grad den er både passiv og aktiv; (3) kjærlighet viser oss vår sårbarhet som mennesker uten å tilintetgjøre oss og (4) kjærligheten kjennetegnes av at dens mening alltid er åpen for forandring.
