Om hvorfor vi fremdeles ikke benytter sosiale roboter i omsorg: innsikter fra antropologiske studier av språkbruk

Abstract

Vi omgir oss i dag med en rekke kunstige taleagenter (chatbots). Det er også forventninger knyttet til kroppsliggjøringen av slike dialogsystemer i form av sosiale roboter; autonome maskiner i en humanoid innpakning som vi kan samhandle med gjennom språk. Aktører i den norske velferdsstaten ser for seg en fremtid der slike maskiner bidrar til å løse krevende oppgaver, særlig knyttet til manglende sosial kontakt i omsorgstjenesten. Denne fremtidsforestillingen baserer seg på at robotene har, eller snart får, kommunikasjonssystemer som muliggjør robust samhandling med mennesker, men til tross for fremskritt innen taleteknologi, er behandling av naturlig språk i kontekst fremdeles et betydelig problem. Denne artikkelen bruker antropologiske perspektiver på språkbruk i praksis, herunder innsikter fra pragmatikk, til å belyse hvorfor sosiale roboter ikke vil kunne løse utfordringer med sosial kontakt i eldreomsorgen i overskuelig fremtid. En kritisk analyse identifiserer den såkalte ‘kodemodellen’ for språkbruk som et underliggende problem, og jeg beskriver et alternativ mer i tråd med det empiriske grunnlaget for menneskelig interaksjon. Utfordringen med roboter i omsorg illustreres med studier av kommunikative praksiser mellom personer med demens og deres omsorgspersoner. Avslutningsvis diskuterer jeg konsekvensene av disse empiriske forholdene for robotenes inntreden i omsorgstjenesten, og antropologiens kritiske bidrag til feltet.
