L'histoire du semis direct au Brésil

Abstract

Le semis direct au Brésil a plus de 30 ans en 2003. S'il est au monde un endroit où l'expression " système semis direct " prend un sens, c'est bien dans ce pays. Système au sens agronomique bien sûr (rotations, associations, gestions intégrées, élevage...) mais aussi, et c'est sur quoi nous voulons insister ici, au sens de communauté d'acteurs impliqués, complémentaires et oeuvrant tous, à leurs façons, vers une même finalité, c'est à dire la progression de ces technologies. C'est le fonctionnement de cet " environnement " dans son ensemble (mû bien sûr par la nécessité économique, en particulier une agriculture sans subventions, et la dégradation catastrophique des terres) qui fait que les surfaces en semis direct au Brésil augmentent actuellement de plus de 1 million d'hectares par an sur un total de 17 millions en 2001 (35 % de la surface semée). Ce qui est considérable ! mais ça ne se fait pas tout seul. Les " frontières agricoles " (Cerrados) offrent encore un terrain de colonisation de 50 millions d'hectares, le champ est donc vaste.
