Abstract

Las infecciones intrahospitalarias constituyen un problema de salud pública por la carga de morbimortalidad y el incremento en el costo hospitalario, el cual llega a ser de hasta cuatro veces el valor generado cuando no se pre- senta infección. Muchas son las causas que se han considerado: higiene del paciente, higiene hospitalaria, esteri- lización, tiempo quirúrgico, y cuidados durante el lavado de manos por los cirujanos y el personal que interviene al paciente, siendo este último un factor muy importante para que la infección del sitio operatorio contribuya con un 38% del total de las infecciones postquirúrgicas. Entre los agentes etiológicos de estas infecciones se destacan Klebsiella spp y Staphylococcus aureus. Este artículo pretende promover la práctica de la Guía de Higiene de Ma- nos de la OMS, que consiste en higienizarse antes y después de todo contacto con el paciente y la instalación de dispensadores cercanos a él, evitando la colonización bacteriana.
