Abstract

ABSTRACT Periodicals are one of the main organs of scientific communication. For this paper, we have analysed 306 political science journals published in 14 Latin American countries in order to detect segmentations and differentiations related to their thematic areas, their access-visibility and their political-institutional framework. Using statistical tools, we identify that the journals are inserted in four publication circuits that represent different publishing practices anchored in the national scientific fields. We could affirm that the structure of scientific communication in political science is very weak. More than half of the publications circulate locally constrained to their publishing institutions and with serious problems of distribution. Only a small number of journals have been able to access regional visibility, and even less to mainstream spaces.
