Provenance

Approaches to a Transatlantic Material History of Literature
Authors: Jessen, C. (Caroline);
Abstract

The endeavor of transatlantic research challenges common ideas of archives. Acknowledging Tim Sommer's conceptualizing archives in terms of materiality, logistics, and economy as well as Tobias Boes' thinking of archives as spatio-temporal operations, Caroline Jessen proposes a plea for a transatlantic material history of literature. Focusing on provenance as an epistemic category, Jessen suggests to use provenance as an epistemic category and to interrogate archival holdings as presented in catalogs and databases, by paying attention to transatlantic transfers, past ownership, and contexts of use and meaning which are marked by provenance information.
