Impulsive hydrodynamics of fluid inside a cylindrical tank and of fluid surrounding a cylindrical pier*

Abstract

Abstract Effective hydrodynamic masses and mass moments have been calculated for the fluid inside a cylindrical tank and outside a cylindrical pier when the base of the tank or pier experiences an impulsive, horizontal translation. The impulsive velocities set up in the tank have been studied with a view to extending the analysis beyond the impulsive time interval. Application of the analysis to a specific example has been made.
