Determination of Remaining Useful Life (RUL) from Vibration Data

Abstract

Maintenance management and balancing budgets between the maintenance that managers want to do versus the maintenance they can afford to do versus operational requirements is the eternal struggle that all maintenance managers face on a daily basis, and will continue to face daily as long as they occupy that position. Maintenance managers are constantly looking for ways to justify their spending, to select the items of equipment that need to be overhauled or replaced, or to do nothing except monitoring the equipment in operation. To satisfy these needs for one par cular customer, BES Asset Reliability have proposed this method of determining the remaining useful life of their equipment based on the vibration readings that are currently being collected. Using the vibration data from several customers in the same industry (including failure types, severities and frequency of occurrence) a severity scale was produced to give indications of deterioration over a two year forecast. This allows the client to develop an ini al schedule for planning maintenance activitities.
