Efecto del potencial mátrico del suelo en el crecimiento del cultivo de estevia (Stevia rebaudiana Bert.)

Abstract

En los ultimos anos la biotecnologia ha introducido en el mercado mundial los edulcorantes artificiales bajos en calorias a base de componentes quimicos, los cuales surgieron para satisfacer las necesidades de personas con limitaciones respecto al consumo de azucar y calorias en su dieta. Entre otras especies, la estevia es una planta de la que se obtienen edulcorantes como esteviosidos y rebaudiosidos, pero su cultivo en Colombia se encuentra tecnicamente rezagado, particularmente en el manejo del riego. Se estudio el potencial matrico del suelo (PMS) en un cultivo de estevia, variedad Morita II, en el municipio de Prado, Sur del departamento del Tolima, Colombia, mediante la instalacion de baterias de tensiometros y la aplicacion de diferentes laminas de agua con el fin de determinar el rango de PMS (0-5 cb, 10-20 cb, 30-40 cb, o 50-60 cb). Se pudo determinar que niveles de riego superiores a los 5,4 mm diarios no redundan en el aumento del indice de cosecha y en la concentracion de edulcorantes para el cultivo de estevia, que un PMS ≤20 cb contribuye hasta en un 1% en el aumento de la concentracion de esteviosidos y en 0,5% en el aumento de la concentracion de rebaudiosidos, y hasta en un 5% en el aumento del indice de cosecha en relacion a PMS superiores. Tensiones entre 50 y 60 cb pueden ser un buen indicador en la eficiencia hidrica de la planta y del riego por goteo, para emisores colocados a 20 cm del cuello de raiz de la planta en sistemas de cultivo de estevia bajo las condiciones agroecologicas de este experimento.
