En lo alto de la Sierra de Pachuca y del lado norte de la misma, se halla situado el antiguo centro minero de Real del Monte, sumido entre dos estribaciones de la sierra que allí forman la Barranca de Omitlán. En el fondo corre el río que nace en ese lugar y que recibe los nombres de Río de Real del Monte, Río de Omitlán y más tarde el de Río del Carmen, al que uniéndose después las aguas de las demás cañadas que bajan de la sierra forma el Río Amxaque.
