THE IMPORTANCE OF VESPOIDEA (HYMENOPTERA) SPECIES AS BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENTS SUMMARY: The species in thefamily Eumenidae are solitary wasps, but those of Vespidae are social wasps. Both Eumenidae and Vespidae adufts feed cxclusively on carbonhydrates derived mainly from nectar 'ies of flowers and the honey-dew of aphids and some other insects. The iarvae are entomophagous. In general, Eumenidae and Vespidae prey on the iarvae of Lepidoptera, principaliy Tortricidae, Geometridae and Noctuidae as well as on some species of ihe iarvae of Curculionidae and Chrysomelidae. Among the prey species there are some economically important pests such as Pieris brassicae (L.), P. rapae (L.), P. napi (L.), Heliothis armigera Hbn., H. virescens (F.), Hyphantria cunea (Drury), Limantria dispar L., Plutella xyloste!la (L.), Philaenus spumarius (Fallen), Chrysomela populi (L.), Hypera postica (Gyll.), Myzus persicae (Sulz.) and, Stomoxys calcitrans L.. Since, the species of Eumenidae and Vespidae are considered to be responsible for reducing the populations of some economic pests, they have a potential as biotic agents in ImegratedPest Managament (IPM
