Grid Strengthening Technologies for Inverter-Based Resource Integration

Abstract

To facilitate the integration of Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), such as solar and wind, into the power grid, various grid or point-of interconnection (POI) strengthening technologies and equipment are being installed or planned for installation. These include STATCOM, synchronous condensers, HVDC, battery storage systems, and more. However, the integration of both IBR and these grid-strengthening technologies presents new challenges for the power system. This panel will examine the scope, configuration, and integration challenges of Inverter-Based Resources (IBR), as well as potential operational difficulties. It will address key issues like grid stability, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder coordination, offering valuable insights into overcoming these obstacles and achieving successful IBR integration into modern power grids. This panel session will cover planning considerations, modeling experiences, and integration studies related to Inverter-Based Resources (IBR). Experts from organizations such as Eversource, EPRI, MISO, the University of Aberdeen (UK), and the University of South Florida (US) will offer their diverse perspectives.
