Le infezioni delle vie urinarie febbrili sono frequenti in età pediatrica: la prevalenza nei lattanti (2-24 mesi) con febbre di origine sconosciuta è di circa il 5%. Nel 10-20% dei casi l’infezione renale provoca la comparsa di una cicatrice, che può essere causa di ipertensione arteriosa o ulteriore danno renale. Per tale motivo e per la paura di sepsi associate, la terapia antibiotica raccomandata è stata per lungo tempo aggressiva richiedendo l’utilizzo di antibiotici per via parenterale. Recenti evidenze indicano che le infezioni febbrili delle vie urinarie possano essere trattate in modo altrettanto efficace per via orale. I farmaci raccomandati sono il cefixime e l’amoxicillina-clavulanato per 10-14 giorni.
