Ahi (Akhi) Şerafeddin Zawiya in Ankara / Ankara Ahi Şerafettin Zaviyesi

Abstract

Abstract The zawiya building, whose restoration is decided by Directorate General of Foundations, in line with the decision of Ankara Regional Directorate, was thoroughly cleaned. Having performed a number of small scale archeological digs, the structure became more definable and survey drawings was prepared by architect Umut Inci (MSc). Afterwards, material analysis were carried out to make more realistic restitution and restoration projects. History of Art report was prepared by Prof. Dr. Hakki Acun. This report helped works of restitution and restoration by providing the information on the origin of zawiyas, their functions, sections and progress throughout the centuries. In line with the prepared history of art report, period photos, other archival and library information, restitution and restoration projects of the structure were prepared and approved by the Regional Committee. Results of the studies on Ahi Serafettin Zawiya, which is the only one structure in Ankara belonging to the period of Selcuk, have been presented here to share with the academia. We see that the origin of zawiyas, defined as multi-functional religious sects or system, can be traced back to the early eras of Islam and spread into the Central Asia region. We know that, in the beginning, zawiya structures didn’t display a proper schema plan, sections of the structures were not defined accurately but were inspired from madrasa with iwans on all four sides of the central courtyard and housing architecture in Asia. Later it is understood that, Ahi Serafettin Zawiya is of no traditional structure, as generally expected, like Yildirim, Yesil and Muratiye Zawiyas in Bursa in Early Ottoman times of which sections are defined properly. Although so many zawiyas are mentioned in the archival sources belonging to the Selcuk period in Ankara, none of them has been identified until recently. With the restoration of the structure, it is aimed to transfer Ahi Serafettin Zawiya to the future generations in a proper condition. Key Words: Ankara, Ahi Serafettin, Zawiya Oz Vakiflar Genel Mudurlugu tarafindan restorasyonu icin karar verilen yapida ilk calismalar Yuksek Mimar Umut Inci tarafindan yapilmistir.
