The funding context of higher\ud education is examined, together\ud with some of the constraints and\ud imperatives to which it gives rise.\ud The history, constitution and\ud operation of the Southern\ud Universities Purchasing\ud Consortium's Libraries Project\ud Group are discussed. The paper\ud closes with a discussion of\ud possible future roles for\ud purchasing consortia.
