Abstract

No estudo dos encéfalos de 38 pacientes que faleceram em decorrência de complicações cardíacas da CMI, os principais achados estão representados por infartos cerebrais (10,5%) e atrofia cerebral (7,9%), este último correspondendo a 3 casos de indivíduos com idade superior a 65 anos. As alterações histológicas foram inespecíficas. representadas por alterações isquêmicas de neurônios, satelitose e tumefaçâo endotelial de vasos da córtex cerebral, lesões estas que podem ser explicadas como decorrentes dos fenômenos anóxicos da ICC. Aspecto interessante foi observado quando do confonto destes dados com aqueles observados no estudo dos encéfalos de casos da forma crônica cardíaca da doença de Chagas. De um modo geral as alterações observadas são muito semelhantes exceto pela freqüência com que ocorre. Na doença de Chagas a atrofia cerebral foi mais freqüente ocorrendo numa faixa etária mais baixa em relação ao que foi visto na CMI. Este dado sugere que a atrofia cerebral do chagásico crônico depende não só dos fenômenos anóxicos da ICC, mas também de um outro fator a ser esclarecido ulteriormente.
