Una visión neuroanatómica de los ganglios basales con algunas implicaciones en su fisiopatología

Abstract

Los glanglios basales son unas masas celulares subcorticales que engloban fundamentalmente al cuerpo estriado (núcleos caudado y lenticular), al que se unen otras estructuras como son principalmente el núcleo subtalámico y la substancia negra. Un aspecto neuroanatómico destaca en los ganglios basales: su profunda heterogeneidad. Esta heterogeneidad puede observarse con claridad desde tres puntos de vista: hodológico, histoquímico y citoarquitectónico. Este artículo trata de correlacionar esta heteragenidad de los ganglios basales con la fisiopatología de alteraciones profundas de los mismos, como son las que se observan en el hemibalismo y en las enfermedades de Parkinson y Huntington.
