Oxidantes y radicales libres en biomedicina

Abstract

Las reacciones donde intervienen oxidantes y radicales han jugado un papel esencial en el origen de las formas de vida aerobias y son una parte integral de la homeostasis celular. Sin embargo y debido a los efectos tóxicos colaterales de esta presión oxidativa, de forma muy temprana en la evolución se desarrollaron los enzimas y factores antioxidantes que son capaces de controlar la presencia y efectos de estos productos. Oxidantes y antioxidantes tienen una clara función en el organismo y un desequilibrio en este delicado balance resulta en muchas alteraciones bioquímicas y celulares que pueden crear condiciones patológicas. Así mismo es creciente el papel que se le da a los radicales libres del oxígeno como factor de envejecimiento biológico (1). Es difícil encontrar actualmente algún campo de la biomedicina donde no pueda encontrarse trabajos relacionados con oxidantes y radicales libres. En los organismos vivos los principales oxidantes y radicales libres son los derivados del oxígeno, que genéricamente denominaremos intermediarios reactivos del oxígeno (IRO). Si bien tenemos una idea acerca de estos compuestos, sus amplias repercusiones y recientes implicaciones en distintas patologías, así como la progresiva complejidad de sus interacciones y efectos celulares justifican, a nuestro juicio, una revisión que intente dar una visión de conjunto sobre estos inevitables, útiles y peligrosos reactivos.
