Abstract

La importancia de la silicosis no sólo radica en su prevalencia y la incapacidad pulmonar que conlleva, sino que además nos proporciona un modelo natural de enfermedad fibrótica intersticial del pulmón de causa conocida, que puede facilitarnos el conocimiento de la patogenia de gran número de fibrosis pulmonares de causa desconocida. Los 50 estudios postmortem efectuados corresponden a mineros que habían desarrollado su actividad profesional en explotaciones mineras de la sierra de Cartagena, trabajando todos ellos en explotaciones cerradas, con tiempos de exposición al polvo muy variables que oscilaron entre cinco y treinta y seis años. Los mineros autopsiados por nosotros respiraron un polvo con abundantes partículas metálicas, sobre todo óxidos de hierro (polvo mixto). Aunque se acepta que la acción patógena se relaciona con la sílice, la misma se ve modificada según la composición del polvo asociado.
