Este artículo intenta responder a una pregunta: ¿es y puede ser el ombudsman o defensor del lector español independiente en su labor de crítica hacia el medio? Y, en caso de que la respuesta sea afirmativa, ¿Qué medios utiliza para lograrlo? En el fondo, por lo que interroga la pregunta es si un ombudsman es realmente eficaz. Está claro que la independencia está unida a la eficacia: en la medida en que el defensor sea independiente, será eficaz, y solamente podrá ser eficaz si consigue ser totalmente independiente.
