Abstract

Se establecen las caracteristicas hidraulicas elementales del golfo de nicoya superior. se usan resultados tantativos obtenidos con un modelo hidrodinámico bidimensional, mediciones rudimentarias de corta duración (horas) y la parametrización de Godwim (1974) para definir la importancia de los terminos inerciales u de friccion en la ecuación unidimensional de momento. Se concluye que la ola de marea del GNS de comporta de forma unidimensional con pocas pérdidas de energía y esta dominada por los terminos inerciales de la ecuacion de momento hasta la isla Chira. De allí para arriba, la fricción domina la propagacion de la ola de marea en el GNS disminuyendo el factor de amplificación. El coeficiente inercial es generalmente mucho más grande que el coeficiente de fricción. esto redunda en amplificaciones del 50% en Punta de Piedra con respecto a Puntarenas. En la cercanía de Punta Morales esta relación se comienza a invertir hasta que en Puerto Moreno la fricción se vuelve dominante. El diagrama de fases muestra un gradiente constante en ambas partes, inferior y superior del Golfo de Nicoya, con un cambio de pendiente del 100% en las cercanías de Punta Morales. Se predice un desfase neto de 55 minutos entre Puntarenas y Puerto Moreno para una marea típica de 3m. Debido a la poca profundidad y al dominio inercial que produce fuertes corrientes, el GNS tiene un régimen de mezclado intenso. este regimen de mexclado le permite a las aguas un alto grado de reoxigenación que, junto con una fuerte actividad de algas productoras de oxígeno, puede explicar las zonas de super-saturación que se observan a pesar de las descargas de afluente municipal no tratado, originado en los poblados circundantes.
